Supporting Genetic Study research
underprivileged VI or ailing persons

Inherited eye diseases are known to be the leading cause of blindness especially in childhood and working-age adult population. They effect almost 1 in 2000 individuals.
They have varied presentations in individuals and so are difficult to diagnose based on clinical examination by ophthalmologists. Also, very few trained and experienced ophthalmologists are there who can identify these conditions. A blood test to look for the underlying genetic defect is required to establish a correct diagnosis. With the approval of gene therapy for one of the inherited retinal disorders, there is a lot of research ongoing for treatment of these previously ignored diseases.
The first fundamental step is to correctly identify the underlying gene defect through genetic testing.
Establishing the gene defect not only allows the patient to take benefit of new treatment modalities, but also improves understanding of the disease progression, future planning as well as risk to other family members.
Unfortunately due to the cost of these procedures many Indian patients are unable to afford these tests. “Coming straight from The Heart Foundation” strives to provide this much needed support to these patients. This testing opens up a plethora of information that can help doctors to better treat and guide these patients.
